Mini Laptops Make Huge Impact On PC Market

By Branko Miletic | Friday | 2008-09-12

According to IDC, mini-laptops, such as the ASUS Eee PC and the HP Mini-Note are changing the global PC business and bringing computing power to the worlds population, and punching well above their weight, and screen sizes for that matter, says a report in the New York Times.

IDC notes that notebooks in general are "experiencing torrid growth, according to the latest statistics and on a global scale, laptop sales for the second quarter were up 37 per cent".

In Europe for example, during the second quarter, "this category increased by 60 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2007, or almost doubling sales growth for all types of computers to 23 per cent from 12 per cent the year before, sparked by the wide appeal of low-cost portables," IDC said.

In the US, notebook computer sales were up 17.7 percent, while at the same time desktop sales declined by 4 per cent says IDC, which also expects the portable computer market in the United States to "double, from 30 million units sold in 2007 to 61.1 million in 2012".

In the Asia/Pacific region (except Japan), sales growth of all types of PCs was up 14 per cent.

However IDC notes that as small laptop sales increase, "with the Internet playing an essential role, the devices are well-suited to an increasingly-connected mobile population, in many cases supplementing rather than replacing one's computing power".
