40" OLED TV From Samsung To Be Shown At CES

By David Richards | Thursday | 2007-12-13

Days after Toshiba announced that they were pulling out of the OLED market, Samsung Electronics has announced it has produced a television with a 40-inch active matrix organic light-emitting diode display. The new technology will go on show at the CES Expo in Las Vegas in January 08.

Samsung is claiming a world first for this large effort - that compares very favourably for the company against competitor Sony's recent 11-inch offering in Japan.

OLED displays, that some consider the future of television, emit their own light so have no need for back lighting, they consume less electricity and can be made to be very slim-line.

Samsung said it plans to showcase the next-gen displays at Las Vegas' Consumer Electronics Show in January, although a later report suggested that it may just be a 31-inch display, rather than the 40-incher, to be transported to the States.
