Senator Conroy Happy About Mobile Market

By Branko Miletic | Wednesday | 2008-07-30

For all those whingers and whiners out there constantly complaining about the state of the mobile and broadband markets in this country, let it be known that the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy thinks that things are pretty rosy at the moment.

Speaking this morning exclusively with channelnews.com.au, a spokesman for the Senator pointed out that there are 3 main competing vendors out there that cover "some 96% of the population", which he believes are "delivering value to customers".

Furthermore, the spokesman said that people may complain about the various data charges for things like the iPhone but that the "ACCC has pretty much addressed that issue".

And in terms of broadband, the spokesman noted that when the National Broadband Network (NBN) tender is finalized later this year, whatever the winning tender will be, the end result will be a better communications system for the country, adding that it will also mean "that any new technologies that come out of it [like WiMAX] will put more downward pressure on prices".

However, on the subject as to whether any final NBN tender will deliver Fibre To The Node (FTTN) or Fibre To The Home (FTTH), the spokesman said that we will "have to wait and see".

So there, all is good with our telcos and broadband at the moment and things will only get better, according to the Federal Government.
