The boss of the Seven Media owned Unwired, David Spence, has said that he is not "fazed" by the entry of Optus and Vodaphone into Wi Max wireless market. He even went as far as describing their networks as being "skinny" and lacking in spectrum.
He has also dismissed speculation that Unwired will be sold by Seven Media claiming that Seven Media boss Kerry Stokes is 100% behind the Company.
He did however say that Unwired will be expanding their sales operation as more consumers take up wireless both in the home and office.
"We currently sell via Harvey Norman and Dick Smith and this has been good for us. We also distribute via Ingram Micro but as demand for Wi Fi products grow we will have to look at expanding our retail operations" he said.
Yesterday both Optus and Vodafone announced new mobile broadband offerings that will compete head on with Unwired. The two Telco's are set to take on both Unwired and Telstra's highly popular NextG service by selling internet-enabled USB keys to connect subscribers to the web on their 3G/HSPA networks.
Vodafone claims it can provide up to 7.2Mbps in connection speeds compared with Optus's maximum 3.6Mbps for mobile broadband.
The Australian newspaper and Australian IT reported "This has really hammered the nail in Unwired's coffin," Gartner Asia-Pacific research director Robin Simpson said. Telsyte research director Warren Chaisatien said the next few months would be "interesting" for Unwired.
