At Last Telstra Rolls Out Fast Broadband

By Sarah Falson | Wednesday | 2007-09-12

Telstra has snubbed the noses of Federal politicians whom it is suing, by rolling out Australia's fastest broadband network. The move comes as the broadband political climate heats up.
Telstra's BigPond internet service provider today announced it is providing the country's fastest cable broadband service for consumers, capable of running at up to 30 Megabits per second (Mbps).

More than 1.8 million homes and businesses in Sydney and Melbourne will have access to ‘BigPond Cable Extreme', though residences in other Telstra HCF areas across Australia will have to make do with the 17 Mbps previously offered.

The new speeds are almost double what Sydney and Melbourne were receiving previously, which is also almost four times faster than standard cable broadband, approximately 120 times faster than entry-level ADSL and more than 500 times faster than a dial-up internet service, said Telstra in today's announcement.

"It is the fastest cable broadband you can get at home in Sydney or Melbourne and demonstrates our commitment to deliver high speed broadband to Australian families," said BigPond Group managing director, Justin Milne.
